Deetjen’s gem with its charming old wooden houses in the most beautiful Big Sur scenery and the hearty scent of redwood trees is enchanted. The Norwegian Helmuth Deetjen and his wife bought this wonderful piece of land back in the 1930s, and for almost as long it has offered Big Sur travelers a home for a night. The 20 rooms, which radiate rustic charm and the romance of bygone times, are spread over various houses, all without keys, television let alone cell phone reception, and are always booked out well in advance. Deetjens is also popular for its delicious American breakfast with Blueberry Pancakes, Egg Benedict or Apple Cinnamon Toast, which is served in the cosy parlor. A place full of patina, with an open fire, many old objects and details, fresh flowers and classical music.
